☀️SELF-ENQUIRY - NATURE & PURPOSE☀️

🌿Karshni: What is the nature of Self-enquiry? What is its purpose? Is there any greater good obtainable by other means?

🌿Bhagavan: The ‘I’-thought is said to be the sum-total of all thoughts. The source of the ‘I’-thought has to be enquired into.

🌿This is Self-enquiry, and not the study of scriptures [alone]. When the source is searched for, the ego gets merged in it.

🌿When the ego, which is mere reflection of the Self, totally disappears, what remains is the true Self alone in all its plenitude and perfection.

🌿The result of Self-enquiry is freedom from all suffering. This is the highest of all fruits. There is nothing higher than this.

🌿Marvellous occult powers may be had through other means. But in the end Freedom can come only through Self-enquiry.

🍂DO NOT GET DELUDED🍂

☀️If your desire is fulfilled in the way that you want, do not get deluded and feel proud by imagining that this has been achieved by the power of your tapas. Realizing the truth that this is [only] due to the blessed grace of God that has flowed towards you, you should humble yourself, feel gratitude, and have ever-increasing devotion to his feet.

☀️Let whatever happens happen in the way it happens. Do not entertain the slightest thought of going against it. Without embarking on any new enterprise, become one with the seer who sees the eye [abide as the Self], he who remains peacefully merged in the Heart.

✨☀️SHUBH GANESHA CHATURTHI☀️✨

On a Ganesh Chaturthi day in 1912, a potter came to the Virupaksha cave with a small image of Sri Ganesha that he had made and presented it to Bhagavan Sri Ramana.

A disciple suggested that both he and
Sri Bhagavan should write a verse to celebrate the occasion, and this is what Sri Bhagavan wrote :-

"Him, who begot you as a child, you made into a beggar; as a child yourself, You then lived everywhere just to support Your own huge belly. I too am a child. You Child God in that niche! encountering one born after you, is your heart made of stone? I pray you look at me."

~Invocation in Aksharamanamalai by Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi

✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨

Sri Ramana Maharshi frequently told the story of a man who made an image of Lord Ganesha with jaggery for worship. At the end of the worship realizing that he had nothing to offer to the Lord, he broke off a piece of the image of the Lord to offer to Him, as Naivedya. Maharshi said :-

“The offering of oneself to God is similar to the offering, to a Ganesh-figure made of jaggery, a portion of jaggery taken from the figure itself; for there is no individual self apart from Him.”

Whatever we say is “mine” is an act of theft or misappropriation of the Lord’s property. What is really meant by the term self-surrender is just the cessation of this theft, by the recognition [by the devotee] that the Lord is the real owner of everything.

✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨

Bhagavan once explained the merit of worshiping Lord Ganesha, by the following story :-

Seeing that Sundaramurthi was going away on a white elephant which had come from Kailash, the Rajah of Chera whispered in the ear of his horse the Panchakshari mantra and got upon it to go to Mount Kailash.

Avvaiyar, who was at the time doing puja to Lord Ganesa, saw them both going to Kailash and so tried to hurry up her puja as she too wanted to go to Kailash.

Seeing that, Ganesha said, ‘Old woman, don’t hurry. Let your puja be performed as usual. I shall take you to Kailash before they reach it.’

Accordingly, the puja was performed in due course. Waving His hand around, Ganesha said, ‘Old lady, close your eyes.’

That was all. When she opened her eyes, she found herself seated in Kailash in front of Parvati and Parameshwara Shiva.

By the time Sundaramurthi and Chera Rajah reached the place, they found her already seated there. Surprised at that, they asked her how she had got there. She told them how Lord Ganesha helped her.

✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨

Wishing you all a very auspicious and blessed Ganesha Chaturthi! May Lord Ganesha's grace continue to bless and guide us all on this path to Self-Realization. 🙏😇

☀️🌿SHUBH GURU-PURNIMA🌿☀️

✨Guru and Grace✨
🪔As Explained by Sri Ramana🪔

I have not said that the Guru is not necessary. But a Guru need not always be in human form. First a person thinks that he is inferior and that there is a superior, all-knowing, all powerful God who controls his own and the world’s destiny and worships him or does bhakti (devotion). When he reaches a certain stage and becomes fit for enlightenment, the same God whom he was worshipping comes as Guru and leads him onward. That Guru comes only to tell him, ‘That God is within yourself. Dive within and realize’. God, Guru and the Self are the same.

Realization is the result of the Master’s (Guru’s) grace, more than teachings, lectures, meditations, etc. They are only secondary aids, whereas the former is the primary and essential cause. Guru’s grace is always there. You imagine it to be something somewhere high up in the sky, far away and which has to descend. It is really inside you in your Heart, and the moment, by any of the methods, you effect subsidence or merger of the mind into its source, the grace rushes forth, spouting as from a spring from within you.

Contact with jnanis is good. They will work through silence. A Guru is not the physical form. Hence His contact remains even after the physical form of the Guru vanishes. After your bhakti to God has matured you, God comes in the shape of a Guru and from outside pushes your mind inside, while being inside as Self He draws you there from within. Such a Guru is needed generally, though not for very rare and advanced souls.

One can go to another Guru after one’s Guru passes away. But after all, Gurus are one, as none of them are the form. Mental contact is always the best.Satsangh means association with Sat or Reality. One who knows or has realized Sat is also regarded as Sat. Such association is absolutely necessary for all. Adi Sankara has said, “In all the three worlds there is no boat like satsangh to carry one safely across the ocean of births and deaths.”

Guru not being confined to physical, His contact will continue to those in need, even after His form vanishes. If one Jnani exists in the world, His influence will be felt by or benefit all people in the world, and not simply His immediate disciples. As described in "Vedanta Chudamani", all the people in the world can be put under four categories: The Guru’s disciples, bhaktas, those who are indifferent to Him and those who are hostile to Him. All these will be benefited by the existence of the Jnani — each in his own way and to various degrees.

⭐️🌸Wishing you all a very Auspicious Guru Purnima. May the grace of all-pervading Sadhguru Sri Ramana guide us all towards our highest good and bless us with the ultimate realization and bliss.🌸⭐️

☀️PRACTICE OF SELF-ENQUIRY☀️

🌿If one attends to the centre of oneself with a keen mind to know “Who am I?”, the identification ‘I am the body’ will die and the Reality will shine forth as ‘I-I’. Then all the illusory differences, which are like the blueness seen in the sky, will disappear.

🌿Restraining the mind from going outside [through the senses], and fixing it always in its Source, Self, which is known as the Heart, so that the vain ‘I’-thought will not rise again, is the Atma-Vichara [Self-enquiry].

🌿Whenever a thought arises, instead of trying even a little either to follow it up or to fulfil it, it would be better to first enquire, “To whom did this thought arise?”.

🌿When one thus inwardly enquires, “Is it not to me that this thought has arisen – then who am I?”, the mind will return to subside in its Source, and the already risen thought will also vanish.

🌿When one daily practices in this manner, since the impurities are being removed from the mind, it will become purer and purer to such an extent that the practice will become so easy that the mind will reach the Heart as soon as the enquiry is commenced.

🌿Just as the creature which come out of the bushes to save their lives, being unable to bear with the heat of the wild forest-fire, are surely burnt to death, so all the vasanas hiding in the Heart will be destroyed, being unable to stand before the growing and blazing fire of the strength of Self-enquiry.

🌿The thought “Who am I?”, after destroying all other thoughts, will itself finally die just like the stick which is used to stir the funeral pyre, and then the supreme Silence will prevail for ever.

🌿When the delusion which has veiled Self, the Light of Consciousness of unlimited Bliss [Sat-Chit-Ananda], is destroyed by the clear enquiry “Who am I?”, one’s own Nature will shine forth gloriously as the Atmakasha [i.e. Space of Self].

🍂The Master is within. But as long as you think you are separate or that you are the body, so long is the Master from 'without' necessary. When the wrong identification of oneself with the body ceases, the Master will be found as none other than the Self.

Does the Guru hold you by the hand and whisper in [your] ear? Because you think you are a body, you think he also has a body, to do something tangible with you. But his work lies within, in the spiritual realm. Leave it all to the Master. Surrender to Him without reserve.

🍂SAMADHI IS DEEP SLEEP DURING THE WAKING STATE🍂

Question: What is deep sleep?

Maharshi: Just as on a dark, cloudy night, no individual identification is possible, and there is only darkness, even though the seer has his eyes wide open, similarly, in deep slumber, the seer is only aware of simple nescience.

Question: Why can't we stay in deep sleep forever or enter it at will?

Maharshi: Deep sleep also exists in the waking state. We are always in deep sleep. That should be consciously understood and realized. There is really no going or coming from it. Becoming aware of the deep sleep state while in the waking state is samadhi. It is nature, i.e. prarabdha, which forces you to emerge from it. Because your ego is not dead, and it will rise again and again.

K.M. Jivrajan: Has one necessarily to pass through the stage of seeing occult visions before attaining Self-realization?

Bhagavan: Why do you bother about visions and whether they come or not?

K.M. Jivrajani: I don’t. I only want to know so that I shan’t be disappointed if I don’t have them.

Bhagavan: Visions are not a necessary stage. To some they come and to others they don’t, but whether they come or not, "you" always exist and you must stick to that.

K.M. Jivrajani: I sometimes concentrate on the brain centre and sometimes on the heart — not always on the same centre. Is that wrong?

Bhagavan: Wherever you concentrate and on whatever centre there must be a "you" to concentrate, and that is what you must concentrate on. Different people concentrate on different centres, not only the brain and the heart but also the space between the eyebrows, the tip of the nose, the tip of the tongue, the lowermost chakra and even external objects. Such concentration may lead to a sort of laya [subsidence of mind] in which you will feel a certain bliss, but care must be taken not to lose the sense of ‘I am’ in all this. You never cease to exist in all these experiences.

K.M. Jivrajani: That is to say that I must be a witness?

Bhagavan: Talking of the ‘witness’ should not lead to the idea that there is a witness and something else apart from him that he is witnessing. The ‘witness’ really means the light that illumines the seer, the seen and the process of seeing. Before, during and after the triads of seer, seen and seeing, the illumination exists. It alone exists always.

K.M. Jivrajani: It is said in books that one should cultivate all the good or daivic qualities in order to prepare oneself for Self-realisation.

Bhagavan: All good or daivic [divine] qualities are included in jnana and all bad asuric qualities are included in ajnana. When jnana comes all ajnana goes and all daivic qualities come automatically. If a man is a jnani he cannot utter a lie or do anything wrong. It is, no doubt, said in some books that one should cultivate one quality after another and thus prepare for ultimate moksha, but for those who follow the jnana or vichara marga [path of self-enquiry] their sadhana is itself quite enough for acquiring all daivic qualities; they need not do anything else.

🍂My life with Bhagavan taught me the value of faith, obedience and surrender. When I obeyed Bhagavan's words, or had complete faith that he would look after all my spiritual and physical needs, everything went well. When I tried to mould my own destiny (such as the time I went to live in the cave and the time I ran away to Polur) things went badly. Life's lessons have thus taught me the value and the necessity of complete surrender. If one surrenders completely to Bhagavan; if one lives by his words, ignoring all others; if one has enough faith in Bhagavan to stop making plans about the future; if one can banish all doubts and worries by having faith in Bhagavan's omnipotence then, and only then, Bhagavan will bend and mould one's circumstances, transforming them in such a way that one's spiritual and physical needs are always satisfied.

☀️CONSTANT MEDITATION☀️

As for happiness, it is one's essential nature. All suffering and misery pertain only to the body. If you do not identify yourself with the body, then the problem is not there. Remember that the next breath may be your last and so, focus all your energies on self-inquiry.

Unless your spiritual practices are constant and steady, the tendency for action or inaction will gain the upper hand. You should, by effort counter these tendencies and try to remain in a state of equilibrium. In such a state, there is only peace and perfect contentment. As the spells of equilibrium increase through constant meditation, then, happiness is felt more and more.

☀️ Whether you continue in the household, or renounce it and go to the forest, your mind haunts you. The ego is the source of thoughts. It creates the body and the world and makes you think you are a grihasta. If you renounce the world, it will only substitute the thought sanyasi for grihasta and the environments of the forest for those of the household. But the mental obstacles are always there. They even increase in new surroundings. There is no help in the change of environment. The obstacle is the mind. It must be got over whether at home or in the forest. If you can do it in the forest, why not in the home? Therefore why change the environment? Your efforts can be made even now, in whatever environment you may be.

While I was engaged in this search, I heard about the extraordinary greatness of Bhagavan Sri Ramana through a holy person whom I happened to meet at Sri Perumbuthur. On 2nd May 1918, I saw Sri Ramana for the first time at Skandashram on Arunachala.

I beseeched him fervently in the following words: 'It is my great desire that I should actually experience your gracious wisdom. Kindly fulfill my desire.'

In those days, Sri Ramana was not speaking much. Still, he spoke kindly as follows:

'Is it the body in front of me that desires to obtain my grace? Or is it the awareness within it? If it is the awareness, is it not now looking upon itself as the body and making this request? If so, let the awareness, first of all, know its real nature. It will then automatically know God and my grace. The truth of this can be realized even here and now.'

Besides speaking like this, he also explained it in the following way, using examples from my daily experience that I could understand and relate to --

'It is not the body that desires to obtain the grace. Therefore, it is clear that it is the awareness that shines here as "you". To you who are the nature of awareness, there is no connection during sleep with the body, the senses, the life-force (prana), and the mind. On waking up, you identify yourself with them, even without your knowledge. This is your experience.

All that you have to do hereafter is to see that you don't identify with them. In the states of waking and dreaming, try to remain as you were in the state of deep sleep. As you are by nature unattached, you have to convert the state of ignorant deep sleep, in which you were formless and unattached, into conscious deep sleep. It is only by doing this that you can remain established in your real nature.

You should never forget that this experience will come only through long practice. This experience will make it clear that your real nature is not different from the nature of God.'

Disciple.: I am a sinner. I do not perform religious sacrifices (homas), etc. Shall I have painful rebirths for that reason? Pray save me!

☀️THE EXISTENCE OF THE HIGHER POWER MUST BE ADMITTED AND RECOGNIZED☀️

We think that the world can be conquered by our efforts. When frustrated externally and driven internally, we feel, “Oh! oh! There is a power higher than man.” The existence of the higher power must be admitted and recognised. The ego is a very powerful elephant and cannot be brought under control by anyone less than a lion, who is no other than the Guru in this instance; whose very look makes the elephant tremble and die. We will know in due course that our glory lies where we cease to exist. In order to gain that state, one should surrender oneself saying, “Lord! Thou art my Refuge!” The master then sees, “This man is in a fit state to receive guidance,” and so guides him.
